Heavy Color - River Passage - Summer 2018

An album both dark and hidden with jagged bursts of color and light.

A collection of songs woven from the traditional music of the villages of Eastern Congo and the celestial electronic compositions of Heavy Color. Deeply synthetic and organic at the same time.  The previous Heavy Color album “Arise Ye Spiritual Machine” was an exploration in re-contextualizing obscure bits of archival music into a modern beat-tape format. On this album, they have gone much further. Traveling to Eastern DRC to hear and listen and record the sounds of and stories of Congolese villages… collaborating with local musicians and producers in Bukavu to create a futuristic vision.

In May of 2015 Earthwork Music asked Ben of Heavy Color and Akili Jackson of Radiant City Arts to travel to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as a musical ambassadors as part of On the Ground's ongoing cultural exchange program which strives to create meaningful connections across cultures through creative collaboration. Sales from this album are helping fund projects in Congo that directly support gender equity and fair wages for women in farming regions as well as the ongoing support of an arts center in the city Bukavu which teaches youth dance, recording technology skills and music lessons in an all around positive, safe space.
